Leonora Grcheva

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Leonora is an architect and urban planner, with a Master in Human Settlements from KU Leuven and a PhD in Urbanism from the IUAV University in Venice. Leonora has been working as a planning consultant for the Urban Planning and Design Lab in UN-Habitat in Nairobi, an integrative facility that coordinates the spatial, economic and legal aspects of urban development and translates them into implementable projects.


She has worked on urban plans and policies in Ghana, Somalia, South Africa, Myanmar, Kenya and other developing countries, and she is the co-author of the publication elaborating the working methodology and tools of the UN-Habitat Lab.


Collaborating with the local NGO Freedom Square in Macedonia, Leonora has organized capacity building workshops and written guidelines for communities on reading urban plans, participation in planning and community-led tree censuses. Her main research interests include urban strategic planning, urban governance, citizen participation and planning for informality.
